If you are not one of the ‘lucky ones’ that live where the sun not only shines throughout the entire year but it also keep you warm, this blog post is for you! For us who live in cold places where the winter can be brutal, we tend to hibernate (or want to) and resume life (and wedding planning) once it gets warm outside again.
Well, what if I told you that it is still possible to have a beautiful engagement session during the cold, freezing months?
Today I want to share with you my go-to tips for a successful winter engagement session that is still going to look beautiful.
- Choosing the location
When choosing the location for your session think about places that have the option of both outdoor and indoor areas for photos. This will allow us to take some great photos outside and jump inside to keep warm.
One of my favorite place around here to shoot during the winter is Longwood Gardens. We get the best of both worlds there. The gorgeous outdoor gardens and the conservatory.
When looking for indoor locations keep in mind how much light is available at the location you want to go. To create photos like you see on my portfolio, I do need to shoot in places that have natural light available.
2. Bring a large blanket instead of winter jackets
Ok, this is one of my favorite tips. During your session we will move from place to place within your location of choice. So instead of wearing your winter jacket that you need to zip up and down, put your arms in and out of, consider bringing a large blanket and wrap it around yourself to get warm in between shots. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just something to keep you warm.
However, if you want to keep the blanket on for a few shots, consider bringing one that compliment your outfit.
Bringing a blanket instead of a jacket will allow us to move faster from place to place while also keeping your entire body warm.
3. Bring something warm to drink in between shots
The goal during my winter sessions is to keep moving fast during shots and to keep you warm in between. So bringing something warm to sip in between shots can be of great value.
And you can also bring cute mugs and pour your drink in it for some cute and romantic photos.
4. Dress In layers
I know it’s easy to think about bulky outfits when we talk about winter sessions, but the truth is you don’t have to choose winter clothes for your shoot if you don’t want to.
If you still would like to wear a dress, you can wear pantyhose or warm leggings paired with cute boots. Guys can wear a button down shirt with a sweater over it, and etc. Dressing in layers will be your best choice for winter sessions.
And if you follow tips 1-3, maybe you won’t even need to choose a lot of layers.
I hope these tips help you and encourage you if you need/ want to schedule your engagement session during the winter.
And if you have any questions, just let me know. I’m here to help!!!
