Today I want to talk with my beautiful brides.
So, this is something I get asked quite a lot… Juliana, what should I wear for my engagement session? Sometimes my couples get a little bit nervous about their up coming session and get hung up on what to wear and how to coordinate their outfits because they think that’s the most important aspect of the engagement session.
I hate to break the news to you, but that’s not what’s going to make your engagement session successful. In my experience, your outfit doesn’t matter as much as… being confident!
Do you mean I have to arrive feeling confident and comfortable? What if I don’t know how to do that in front of the camera?
No, that’s not what I’m talking about. That’s not what I mean. My work involves taking pictures every weekend and when I’m in front of the camera, I still don’t feel 100% comfortable.
I don’t expect you to show up knowing what to do and already be comfortable with a camera in front of you. I do have a system I use to help my couples pose naturally and feel comfortable throughout the session…
When I say confidence is the big “secret” instead of getting overwhelmed and stressed about choosing your outfits, is that you should focus on figuring out WHAT makes you feel comfortable and confident.
For example, I’m very self-conscious about my arms. So whenever I’m in front of the camera, I choose outfits that will cover my arms, at least a little bit. This simple choice helps me show up a little bit more confident because I know the part of my body that makes me feel self-conscious is covered, so I can relax.
If, for example, you are not very comfortable with showing your legs, you can choose to wear a floor-length, flowy dress.
(By the way, I recommend a flowy dress for any lady out there, despite if you feel self-conscious or not about your legs. Long flowy dresses photograph very well and are very feminine! Just an extra bonus tip for you!)
You get what I’m talking about, right? This is how you rock your photo session, by showing up comfortable and with confidence!
Know what you are comfortable with and what makes you self-conscious. Don’t be afraid to communicate that with your photographer. When my couples let me know what I should look out for, I pay even more attention to that particular area and I try to highlight other areas instead. Make sense?
All JTP Brides receive a complimentary engagement session styled guide when they book with me. The magazine is filled with tons of information on what to wear, how to prepare for your session, choosing the location and the time for your shoot and of course, how to coordinate your outfits.
If you have any questions regarding this topic, send me a message! I’ll be glad to help you. But don’t forget the main thing that will help you rock the engagement session. Be “confident” in your choice.
